Status Report of UL 2264
by Laurie Florence
Staff Engineer, Underwriters Laboratories

During the October 28 and 29, 2003 meeting of the UL 2264 Standards Technical Panel (STP), it was decided that UL 2264 (Gaseous Hydrogen Generators) should be harmonized with the ISO TC 197 documents for fuel processing types and water electrolysis types of hydrogen generators that were being developed in the ISO TC 197 Working Groups 8 and 9. The work of the UL 2264 STP would consist of developing the US differences. It was also agreed, that in order to harmonize with the ISO documents, UL 2264, would need to be divided into three parts: water electrolysis, fuel processing and water reaction. Task groups were set up to develop US differences for the ISO documents and to review the ISO documents to make sure that there were no significant conflicts between common requirements for water electrolysis and fuel processing types of hydrogen generators.

Prior to the STP meeting, UL reached an agreement with CSA America to co-publish the fuel processing type (reformer) portion of UL 2264.

A meeting was held on May 6-7, 2005 of the UL 2264 STP task groups. At that time, the work completed by the task groups was discussed and some additional assignments were given. Significant issues brought up in the task groups including conflicts between the ISO documents for common requirements were forwarded to the ISO TC 197 US TAG to be addressed by the particular ISO Working Groups.

The next meeting of UL 2264 STP will be scheduled for October 20 and 21, 2004. During that meeting, the STP will review the work of the task groups and the draft of the water reaction types portion of UL 2264, which has no ISO counterpart.
