New Micro Fuel Cell Standard in Development
by Karen Hall
Vice President, Technical Operations of the National Hydrogen Association

IEC/TC-105 has recently approved a new work item on Micro Fuel Cell Power Systems – Safety. It will be introduced in the program of work as Fuel cell technologies – Part 6: Micro Fuel Cell Power Systems – Safety, under new working group 8. The convenor is Mr. Harry Jones at Underwriters Laboratories in the USA. Nine P-member countries approved the new work item, and six have nominated an expert to the new working group. ISO/TC-197 has also nominated two experts for liaison. Working group 7 has a similar activity underway for portable fuel cells. One country voted to not create the new work item, but instead to include the aspects of the proposal into an existing activity on portable fuel cells, in working group 7. Early activities for this group, presumably, will be defining the terms “portable fuel cell” and “micro fuel cell”, and determining requirements that may be different regarding safety. We will report more as this activity develops.
