Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards a Key Topic at NHA's 15th Annual Conference
by Steve Hester
National Hydrogen Association

The DOE Office of Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Infrastructure Technologies formally announced the eighth annual Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Summit will be held on, June 15-17, 2004. This year the title of the Summit has the added wording "Hydrogen" to the previous "Fuel Cells Summit" to more accurately reflect the scope of the meeting. Also, for the first time, the Summit will be conducted outside of the D.C. metropolitan area, in Miami, Florida. and will have an informative seminar on the third day.

The seminar, to be conducted jointly by Dr. Michael Swain of the University of Miami and Dr. Jay Keller of Sandia National Laboratory, will include lectures and demonstrations of the lean flammability and safety setback projects being used to verify the physical properties of gaseous hydrogen for the development of standards.

This year's summit will be held at the University of Miami Convocation Center, Coral Gables, Florida and will include a presentation of the first "hydrogen safety project reviews" conducted for the recently formed DOE Hydrogen Safety Review Panel.

The goal of each Summit is to bring the fuel cell development community together to provide industry with information and organizational support in developing performance, installation, and operation standards for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Additionally, the Summits provide an opportunity for developers to monitor the progress of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies, ancillary equipment (inverters, fuel reformers, storage tanks, refueling stations), and to identify issues related to the acceptance of these products in the building code community.

The Summit agenda this year includes:

* Status reports on RD&D in the areas of stationary, portable, and vehicular fuel cell technologies
* Status reports on codes and standards activities related to hydrogen
* Status reports on remaining institutional issues
* Identification of action items and formation of voluntary teams to address these issues

For more information, a draft agenda, and registration materials see the PNNL summit website at http://www.pnl.gov/fuelcells/summits/current_summit.stm. The registration fee is $200 and the PNNL website gives details for room reservations at a nearby Marriott Hotel for a discounted rate of $107 per night for reservations made by June 1, 2004.
