Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards a
Key Topic at NHA's 15th Annual Conference
by Steve Hester
National Hydrogen Association
The NHA has received information from a company that utilizes
hydrogen in their processes to identify leaks in various residential
and industrial applications.
American Leak Detection (www.americanleakdetection.com)
in Palm Springs, CA is a leader in the detection of hidden leaks
and line location for electrical, water, and sewer systems.
Established in 1974, there are now over 145 franchised offices
operating in 38 states and 10 countries. American Leak Detection
utilizes a number of test gases in several applications to save
residential and industrial customers the expense of costly excavation
and building exploration to identify a leak. This "Leak
Detection Without Destruction" service is utilized on pools
and spas, potable water lines, cross country oil lines, sewer
lines, residential gas lines, and the like. Their extensive
list of techniques and equipment includes acoustic emission
amplifiers and filters, digital leak processors, molecular analyzers,
mechanical test devices, and recently a patented device that
uses a mixture of hydrogen and helium for testing pressurized
and other basic pipeline systems.
The concern that American Leak Detection has mentioned to the
NHA is that there are instances where personnel from the city,
county, electric and gas utilities, and general customers may
need assurances and information on the safety of their processes.
They are asking for a consultant or government entity to analyze
their hydrogen use and help them to understand the safety issues
related to their leak detection processes. They are interested
in obtaining related hydrogen safety information that would
be valuable to both their operators, approval agencies, and
their concerned customers that the use of both hydrogen and
helium they are using is safe.
