Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards a Key Topic at NHA's 15th Annual Conference
by Karen Hall
Vice President, Technical Operations of the
National Hydrogen Association

The National Hydrogen Association is pleased to announce a series of forums to discuss hydrogen safety, codes and standards in conjunction with our 15th Annual U.S. Hydrogen Conference and H2Expo, which will be held in Hollywood, California from April 26-30. Hydrogen, A Clean Energy Choice, will include three sessions on hydrogen safety, codes and standards. Two sessions will include peer reviewed papers, and one session will feature a panel discussion on the U.S. Model Codes, and in particular, the activities underway to include hydrogen energy technologies.

As many of you know, the Annual U.S. Hydrogen Conference draws interest from a number of related activities, as an opportunity to hold workshops, working group meetings, and short-courses.

At this time, three hydrogen safety, codes and standards related meetings are being planned for the week of the conference in addition to the regular Conference agenda.

U.S. TAG Chairman and Administrators
One will be the second meeting of U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Chairmen and Administrators to discuss common issues facing them in the development of international standards for hydrogen energy systems, including fuel cells. This meeting will be co-hosted by the NHA and the U.S. Fuel Cell Council.

NREL - Hydrogen Specifications
At the second meeting, NREL will host a workshop on hydrogen specifications. This workshop aims to bring together stakeholders to address the various activities that are developing hydrogen purity specifications. The objective of the workshop is to facilitate a comprehensive and coordinated approach to the development of hydrogen specifications.

Hydrogen Safety Codes and Standards Coordinating Committee
And finally, the DOE/NREL Hydrogen Codes & Standards Coordinating Committee is planning an in-person meeting during the week. This group meets monthly by teleconference, and tries to meet quarterly in person. The week’s activities give many of the participants a reason to stay in Hollywood for the entire week.

The meeting space is filling up fast, and the final agenda is being set. Please visit the official conference website at www.HydrogenConference.org to register and for up-to-date information on the conference, H2Expo USA, and related meetings.
