Are Standards for Valves for Hydrogen Service Needed?
by Karen Hall
Vice President, Technical Operations of the
National Hydrogen Association

A recurring question has arisen in discussions about standards for hydrogen energy systems. Does industry need standards for valves used in hydrogen service?

Both ASME and ISO have committees that produce valve standards. None of them currently address valves in hydrogen service. As a result, several questions beg an answer:

  • Does industry need a standard specific to hydrogen, for stationary power or hydrogen filling stations? If so, would a new standard be required, or would modification of existing standards be sufficient?

  • Can existing valves be qualified for hydrogen use?

  • For what pressures could they be qualified?

  • Currently, we have a need to assure safety, yet what level of quality assurance is needed?
The NHA would like to hear from industry regarding valves used in current hydrogen projects.
  • What standard is currently used?

  • Do you have a need for a specific hydrogen valve standard?

  • Do you feel existing standards are sufficient?
