GM Makes Strides in Gaining Regulatory Approval for Hydrogen Demonstrations
by Karen Miller, National Hydrogen Association

The National Hydrogen Association (NHA) is pleased to announce two upcoming events: the NHA Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards Workshop and Air Products’ KnowH2ow® Hydrogen Safety Training Workshop for Fueling Stations Seminar. These hydrogen safety events will be co-located with Fuel Cell Summit VII at the Inn and Conference Center, University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Maryland, May 28-29, 2003. Please note that each event has a separate registration.

NHA Hydrogen Safety Codes and Standards Workshop
The NHA Hydrogen Safety Codes and Standards Workshop is free, but space is limited, so please register soon. It will be held on Friday May 30 from 8:30 am – 11:30 am.

The NHA workshop will provide an overview of the NHA’s current work items which include:

  1. Regulations
Navigate various National and International regulations (DOT, etc.) for Hydrogen storage technologies – including on-board vs. off-board applications.
  2. Analyze Impacts of Draft Global Technical Regulations
The European Union is developing draft regulations for hydrogen vehicles. Through a UN committee, the US and other non-European countries have opportunities to comment during this process. Eventually, the UN may adopt these draft regulations as Global Technical Regulations which can be legally binding. How would this impact U.S. companies? How would it be implemented in the U.S.?
  3. Support DER Road Show
The NHA has already prepared a training module on hydrogen for this purpose. Activity would include participation in Road Shows that request hydrogen training to present the module, and arrange hardware demonstrations from members in Road Shows locations near member companies.
  4. CSA support of NGV revisions for H2 tanks
CSA America has invited the NHA to provide additional names to add to the list for potential members of the technical advisory group (TAG) to develop the NGV2 standard to address hydrogen on-board vehicle storage cylinders.
  5. DOD Portable power coordination
Work with contacts at DOD involved in fuel cell activities to facilitate safety, C&S information transfer in both directions.
  6. Review NFPA 70 for NEC requirements
Review NFPA 70 to determine if there are any issues regarding hydrogen safety and developing C&S activities for hydrogen system components.
  7. Continue ongoing coordination activities with SAE, USFCC, DOE, others
Continue to provide hydrogen safety expertise to SAE and USFCC working groups, DOE Hydrogen C&S Coordinating Committee, and other efforts as appropriate.

Participants will hear an overview of each of these activities, and have the opportunity to join NHA working groups to advance these efforts. The NHA Safety, Codes and Standards activities are open to members as well as non-members. Only NHA members may Chair a working group or committee, but anyone interested in contributing to the work items is welcome to participate.

KnowH2ow® Hydrogen Safety Training
Following the NHA Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards Workshop, Air Products and Chemicals has agreed to hold a ½-day Hydrogen Safety Training Workshop on Fueling Stations. This special training session on hydrogen safety has been scheduled in response to many requests from those who were unable to attend the sold-out 1-day Workshop held on March 4 at the NHA’s 14th Annual U.S. Hydrogen Conference and Hydrogen Expo USA. The March 4 Workshop received excellent reviews, and space is expected to go quickly for this more focused, ½-day event. For more information about the workshop, and to register, visit www.airproducts.com/h2energy. If you have any questions please call +1-800-704-8343 or e-mail Air Products at KnowH2ow@apci.com. Please note that a fee is required for this event. Space is limited to 40 participants, so please make your reservations early.

The Fuel Cell Summit VII will be May 28-29, 2003. Please note there is a fee for this meeting.
