SDOs Meet with DOE to discuss Harmonization of Codes and Standards Efforts by
Patrick Serfass, National Hydrogen Association
Today, leading
standards development organizations (SDOs) met with Neil Rossmeissl from the Department
of Energy (DOE) and representatives from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL) to review the state of the SDOs’ activities and discuss how they might
reach harmonization in their efforts to develop essential codes and standards
for hydrogen, fuel cell and related technologies.
The meeting, which featured
representatives from American National Standards Institute, American Petroleum
Institute, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society for Testing
and Materials, CSA America, Department of Transportation, ExxonMobil, International
Code Council, National Fire Protection Association, Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition,
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Praxair, Sandia National Laboratory,
Sentech, Shell Hydrogen, Society of Automotive Engineers, Underwriters Laboratories
and UTC Fuel Cells was hosted by the National Hydrogen Association at their office
in downtown Washington.
Each SDO was asked to make a short presentation
covering 6 topics: - Charter
- Relevant standards, codes, and
regulations under development or planned
- Schedule
- Testing, validation,
and research and development needs
- Funding requirements
- Licensing
standards to DOE for web-based public access
After
the presentations, Jim Ohi (NREL) coordinated a discussion for input on a harmonization
template to name the various SDOs that would be working on certain codes and standards.
The purpose was to proactively prevent the replication of current work and foster
the efficient development of new and developing codes and standards. The
information gathered at this harmonization meeting will be used to support the
implementation of a 5-year plan by DOE to support a smooth and well-organized
transition to a hydrogen economy. Currently, the 5-year plan is still under
review.
