U.S. Technical Advisory Group Approves Two New Work Items
by Karen Miller, National Hyrogen Association

With unanimous approval received and responses from 15 U.S. TAG members of ISO TC 197, the United States will forward a new work item proposal for hydrogen generators using fuel processing technologies through ANSI to the Secretary of ISO/TC 197. This is to be a joint new work item with the Netherlands.

The New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) is for an International Standard for Hydrogen generators using fuel processing technologies and is submitted by Mario Sandoval representing HydrogenSource and Shell Hydrogen (the Netherlands) and Steve Kazubski from CSA America.

Steve and Mario presented the proposal to the ISO/TC 197 U.S. TAG during the meeting held on May 21st in Chantilly VA. If accepted as a new work item proposal by the U.S. TAG and Dutch ISO/TC 197 TAGs, the NWIP will be presented to ISO TC197 as a joint proposal of the USA and The Netherlands.

Mario Sandoval is being proposed as Project Leader for the NWIP. Once the country members of TC197 have accepted the NWIP, Steve Kazubski will be proposed as Secretary of the new working group.

The U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 197 also overwhelmingly approved a New Work Item Proposal from Ned Stetson of Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems for "Transportable gas storage devices, hydrogen absorbed in reversible metal hydride." This item was developed through the NHA Codes and Standards Working Group 2, Containers: Metal Hydrides. The U.S. TAG can now forward the proposal to ANSI requesting consideration by ISO/TC 197.

Scope of proposed project:
This project will develop standards for the safe design and use of transportable gas storage devices, valves and pressure relief devices, intended for use with a metal hydride, gaseous hydrogen storage system. This standard shall apply to refillable devices only.

ISO TC 197 will circulate the NWIPs to the member countries of ISO TC 197 for a three-month vote. If the NWIPs are approved, the new work items will be assigned to an existing working group, or a new working group may be formed. The NHA will publish the results in a future edition of the Hydrogen Safety Report. If you are interested in participating as a U.S. expert on either of these new work items (should they be accepted by ISO TC 197) please contact Debbie Angerman, U.S. TAG Administrator, ISO/TC 197, Compressed Gas Association, 4221 Walney Road, 5th Floor, Chantilly, VA 20151.
